On October 1, 2010, VoIP.com merged with California-based Phone Power, LLC. Prior to that, VoIP.com was a privately held corporation located in Boca Raton, FL, and had been in the Internet phone service business since January 2006.

According to the press release from Phone Power,

Moving forward, the VOIP.com brand will co-exist independently with the Phone Power brand. Phone Power plans to manage the VOIP.com brand by continuing to invest in marketing, infrastructure and customer support. Voip.com clients will gain access to Phone Power’s advanced features such as their free softphone, mobile apps, and free international calling.

Standard Features

VoIP.com offers free calls to the US, and Canada using standard phone equipment with an adaptor. The phone adaptor is free, you pay shipping and handling. Every plan comes with 60 free international calling minutes to selected countries. Other standard features include; free second line, anonymous ID call rejection, *69 call return, call waiting, caller ID, enhanced 911, directory assistance using 800-GOOG-411, outbound caller ID blocking, speed dialing with one or two digits, three-way calling and voicemail with multiple receiving options.

VoIP.com added a Windows PC soft-phone to their basic service offering following the merger with Phone Power. Using their SoftPhone app, any Windows based computer can be used (with microphone and speakers or headset) as a phone as long as you have access to an Internet connection.

Features That Can Be Managed Online

VoIP.com online account management is handled at Phone Power’s online system. Features that can be managed online include; upgrading/downgrading services, caller ID, call waiting, call history and more. You can also use the Click2Call feature through this portal. Of course you can also manage your payment methods, make payments and view invoice history.

VoIP.com Service Plans

VoIP.com has one residential service plan with four pricing options.

  • · For new customers, a 12-month contract with a single payment of $99.95

VoIP.com’s Hosted PBX 12 Month plan features 5,000 minutes per month to any location in the US or Canada for $54.95 per month. This plan offers over 30 PBX and calling features. There is a $10.00 setup fee and a 2-cent per minute charge for minutes of outbound calling over the included 5,000 minutes per month.

The Hosted PBX – No Contract plan has the same features as the 12 Month Contract plan, except it has a $25.00 setup fee. The price is the same, $54.95 per month.

Additional Features

Additional lines may be added to your account with all calls listed on one bill. 90 Kbps from your broadband connection will be required for each phone that is in use simultaneously. The cost is $19.95 per month for each line or $199 if you choose the yearly prepaid plan.

Virtual Phone Numbers can be set up in order for calls to be received as local calls within the selected area code. The calls will be received on the line that you have selected. The cost is $4.95 per month with a one-time $9.95 set up fee.

Toll-Free Numbers will allow those in the US to call you for free. The cost is $5.00 per month plus 4-cents per minute on incoming calls. Current toll free numbers cannot be transferred to the system. (Note: As of 2/9/11, the VoIP.com website still shows some old pricing information on the toll-free feature.)

VoIP.com also offers a 30 day money back guarantee. You will need to request cancellation within 30 days and return the equipment that was initially sent from VoIP.com, in its original packaging. Credits exclude international calls per minute charges, Directory Assistance, and overage charges.

The Money Back Guarantee applies only to the Residential Service Plan customers who cancel within 30 days and have less than 200 minutes of usage.
